Baltimore Ranked Second in Nation for High-Tech Job Growth

February 15, 2012

The tech industry has been cited to exceed the new employment rate by four times. Additionally, during financial downturns, technology is often cited as an industry that continues to evolve and grow despite economic conditions. Recent results of a survey conducted by Forbes magazine defined the top cities for high-tech growth, and interestingly proved that Baltimore is a strong area contender in the industry.

Forbes Magazine surveyed the 51 largest metro areas in the nation to determine the best cities for high-tech job growth. The results may surprise you. Forbes ranked Baltimore the second best city for IT jobs, following right behind Seattle, which ranked as number one. Silicon Valley ranked in a mere 17th place. Forbes determined survey rankings based off data collected from the economic modeling firm, EMSI. The data measured metropolitan areas with the most gain in high-tech jobs over the last ten years, with a focus on areas which have steadily increased job growth over the past two years.

Factors affecting the rates in job growth include the concentration of research universities, cost of living, and business climate. Forbes cited Baltimore and the DC metro area as high-growth areas primarily due to the proximity to the federal government. The Baltimore area has seen strong development in engineering, research, programming, and systems design, and due to the expenditure of the federal government, will most likely continue to see growth in these areas for the coming years.

See below for how the top five cities ranked:
1.    Seattle, Washington
2.    Baltimore, Maryland
3.    Columbus, Ohio
4.    Raleigh, North Carolina
5.    Salt Lake City, Utah
